INDICATIONS

Serious Infections Causing Pathogens
Lower Respiratory Infections (pneumonia, empyema and lung abscess) Anaerobes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, other streptococci (except Enterococcus faecalis ) and Staphylococcus aureus
Skin and Skin Structure Infections (cellulitis, abscesses and wound infections) Streptococcus pyogenes Staphylococcus aureus , and Anaerobes
Gynaecological Infections (endometritis, pelvic cellulitis, vaginal cuff infections, nongonococcal tubo-ovarian abscess, salpingitis and pelvic inflammatory disease) Anaerobes Chlamydia trachoma or tis

ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE

Dosage and route of administration should be considered by severity of infection, the patient’s condition and the
  • susceptibility of the causative pathogens.  Less complicated infections: 1200 - 1800mg / day administered in 3 or 4 equal doses.  Daily adult dosage of clindamycin injection (infections of the intra-abdominal area, female pelvis and other
  • complicated or serious infections): 2400 - 2700mg / day given in 2,3 or 4 equal doses

Clindamycin: 150 to 300mg four times a day orally (can be increased to 450mg four times a day) or 600mg to 2.7g daily intravenously in two to four divided doses, increased if necessary in life-threatening infection to 4.8g daily (maximum per dose 1.2g) With Ciprofloxacin (consider safety issues) And/or Gentamicin

Guideline for treatment of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)2

Empiric treatment for PID in the inpaƟent seƫng includes:

  • Cefotetan or
  • CefoxiƟn or
  • Clindamycin (900mg IV every 8 hours) plus gentamicin (3 to 5mg / kg IV once daily)
